Sanitary/Storm Sewer Departments

The Sewer Department's mission is to provide the community with a sanitary sewer collection system that will ensure the optimum transportation of sewage with minimum interruption and backups through maintenance, repair and replacement of the sanitary sewer system. The City has approximately 63 miles of sanitary sewer lines consisting mainly of 8" vitrified clay pipe, 987 manholes and 30 lift stations.  Approximately another 60 miles of sanitary sewer lines are on private property where it is up to the property owner to ensure pipes are unobstructed.  See the presentations below on the challenges the City faces with regard to maintenance of the entire sytem, whether on public or private property.

Storm water refers to runoff from land and impervious areas such as paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops during rainfall and snow events without the benefit of treatment.  Storm water discharges are a concern because they sometimes contain pollutants in quantities that could adversely affect water quality.

The City's storm water collection system consists of 779 catch basins, 209 manholes, 19 miles of 12" to 48" pipe, 259 inlet-outlet structures, and 24 storm drainage ponds.
