COMMUNITY MEMBER ENGAGEMENT ENCOURAGED

Council and Staff continue actively working to resolve the elevated manganese issues identified in our water supply. Our Engineers at Bolton and Menk have re-run the numbers for the proposed Water Treatment plant and due to inflation, supply chains, and market trends; the total cost is now at $36.4 million – making this project even more challenging for the City to fund.  We are actively working with Senator Kelly Morrison and Representative Andrew Myers to continue pursuing State funding for this crucial project.  Both Morrison and Myers are supportive of Mound’s need for a water treatment plant to remove the manganese from the water.  We won’t know the outcome until May at the end of the legislative session; but now is the time to engage directly as constituents to help them justify our request while it works through Committee and full chamber hearings and voting procedures.  Make sure your voice is heard by emailing, sending a letter, or making a phone call, or better yet do all 3!  Below is text you can copy/paste into a message to them requesting their support for funding the project.  Suggested cut/paste comments and email addresses are provided here for your convenience.

Dear [Senator/Representative];

Thank you for the essential support you have provided our community over the last 22-months of evolving progress to find and finance a solution to the elevated manganese levels present in our city’s water supply.  As you know, this matter affects the health of every member of our community and resolving it depends on financial support from the State.  We were disappointed this legislation was not completed in the last session.

Since last year, inflation, supply chains, and the construction marketplace for complex infrastructure work have added significantly to the original estimated cost; now $36.5M.  Putting the increased cost of this project on resident/rate-payers would drive even more significant financial hardship for a substantial number of community residents already burdened with disproportionate utility costs.

Your work to propel our project through the legislative process is greatly appreciated.  Our community needs your continued support and advocacy throughout the 2023 legislation session to ensure the essential funding remains in the final budget/spending bills on their way to the Governor’s desk.  Thank you for your continued, dedicated service.
