Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant Flushing
Hydrant flushing is an essential activity serves two critical functions.  First, it is how we verify system ability to support critical fire protection activities.  Pipes, valves and hydrants are operated to ensure they function properly and we spot-check flow levels to ensure the system is performing to our expected standards and is ready to support firefighting activities if ever called upon.

Second, flushing purges the system of rust sediments that form from the natural iron content in our source water aquifers.  This iron begins to oxidize once exposed to air and forms microscopic particles of rust that settle out in the system.  The exaggerated flows created during flushing drive this sediment out of the pipes through the flushed hydrant.  Without flushing, the rust sediments would build up to intolerable levels; as would the impact in your home.  Flushing procedures and sequencing are refined each year in effort reduce the amount that flushing in one area of the city may impact another; all to minimize the impact of this essential maintenance operation to your home.

Hydrant Flushing Frequency
Hydrant flushing is completed once each year, typically in the late spring/early summer.  We announce our plans for flushing by publishing a notification in The Laker Newspaper, posting on the City website, placing local signage throughout the community, and messaging through our emergency notification system, RAVE.  As flushing progresses, we re-notify each area where flushing will occur daily to ensure homeowners are aware that we are in their neighborhood and possible discoloration of water in their home is caused by this essential operation.

Residents are encouraged to subscribe to the RAVE notification tool for many reasons; staying informed during flushing is just one of them.  Click HERE to register.

PLEASE NOTE: Trying to run the faucet for an extended time will not “flush out” the sediment. The sediment must settle in the pipes, prior to delivering clear water into your home. This just takes time. We appreciate your patience.
