Docks & Commons Program

Docks & Commons Program
The City of Mound manages a unique program called the Mound Docks & Commons Program. It is the largest municipally owned dock program in the State of Minnesota, permitting up to 637 boats annually on Lake Minnetonka.

The Program is unique and offers an amenity to all residents that might not otherwise be attainable.  It is that many in the community appreciate and is therefore safeguarded as a special quality of life feature only our community can offer on this scale.

The Docks & Commons Commission (DCC) is the city advisory commission that discusses and makes recommendations to the City Council related to the Program.

History
When that city was being development between the years 1906-1921, developers decided to create linear access-ways, called "Commons", along some of the neighborhood shores as they platted new subdivisions. It was their desire to dedicate the shorelines of Mound, just as parks are dedicated for public use, so that all Mound residents could enjoy the use of the lake, not just those whose property faces (abuts) the lake.

The Program: Dock Sites and Slips
Inland Mound residents have an opportunity to have access to Lake Minnetonka through approximately 144 dock sites and 100 slip sites. Even though some of the dock sites are located nearby a participating resident's private property, these sites are not transferable when the property is sold. The city maintains a waiting list to receive a site.

The Program: Abutting Dock Sites
In addition, there are approximately 167 "abutting" dock sites located within the designated Commons and adjacent to lakeshore property. These dock sites are transferable when the adjacent property is sold. The residents of these properties must complete a yearly dock application, pay their fees, and provide and maintain their own docks.

The Program: Lost Lake Slips
The city also operates 47 overnight slips in Lost Lake near to the Lost Lake Commons Park. Of the 47 slips, 27 are reserved for the townhome residents at the Villas on Lost Lake. These residents have first right of refusal to these sites. Of the 47, an additional 10 are reserved for the residents of the Artessa Lifestyle Communities Housing Association Co-op. These residents also have will have first right of refusal to these sites.  Any slips remaining are offered to non-townhome/co-op residents on a year-to-year basis.
