Hydrant Flushing
Hydrant flushing is a water system maintenance activity that serves two critical functions. First, it confirms the system's ability to support critical fire protection activities by making sure everything is in working order. Second, flushing the system pushes out sediments that form in the pipes.
Hydrant Flushing FrequencyHydrant flushing is completed once a year, generally in late spring/early summer. The public is notified ahead of time with the publishing of notices in the
local newspaper, on the city website, the city's social media, the placement of signage around the city, and other means available.
Water Hardness & Iron Level
The city's water hardness is 21-24 grains. The iron level is .92.
Note: Although the hardness level is below the state mandated level, many residents choose to install a water softener to help mitigate calcium and magnesium deposits that can build up on pipes. Build up can contribute to reduced water flow and the inefficient use of water when using appliances.

Water Sprinkling & Restrictions
Between May 15 and September 1 each year, an odd/even lawn sprinkling regulation is in effect for systems connected to the city's water system.
Note: Properties with even-numbered addresses may only sprinkle lawns on days with even-numbered dates. Properties with odd-numbered addresses may only sprinkle on odd-numbered days.
One-month exceptions may be granted for the laying of new sod, new grass, or landscaping upon contacting the City of Mound. If there is a declared water shortage or water pressure emergency, all sprinkling and water will be prohibited for a set period of time. A public notice will be issued.
Water Sprinkling Tips
- Sprinkling in the early morning or in the evening is the best time of day to do so. It is recommended to not sprinkle laws between the hours of noon and 6 PM, when research shows that as much as 75% of the sprinkled water quickly evaporates.
- Water trees and gardens with a hose rather than a sprinkler.
